The Administration Buildings
The view, below, looking northwest from the Observation Wheel, embraces
the eastern buildings of the Washington
University group. By a fortunate circumstance these buildings, which
were approaching completion at the time of the site for the World's Fair,
were secured for the use of the Exposition. They were immediatly occupied,
when completed, by the President, directors, chiefs and assistants engaged
in the creation of the great Exposition. An outlay of nearly one million
dollars is represented in the buildings. The massive structure with central
tower serves the purpose of the World's Fair Administration building and
cost $250,000. The building on the left was occupied by the director of
works and his forces. Opposite the Administration building, on the west
side of the quadrangle, is the Hall of Congresses, decorated with richly
carved stone, which also represents an outlay of $250,000. On the North
side of the quadrangle is the Anthropology building. In the extreme left
of the picture below is the building occupied by the Board of Lady Managers.
The farther bulding in the center of the picture is occupied by the commandant
of the Jefferson Guard. Washington University is nearly 75 years old and
these buildings, with others west of the, on a tract of 110 acres, compose
the new home of this famous institution.
