The Missouri State Building
The most northern of the group on the Plateau of States, stood
directly south of the U.S. Government Building.
It was 312 by 150 feet in area, and cost $125,000. To the predominating
Roman type of architecture some purely American Features were added. The
dome was a perfect hemisphere, gilded and crowned with the magnificent statue
of Winged Victory. The central portion of the building was decorated with
sculptured groups and single statues of great beauty. A rotunda 76 feet
square was the principal interior feature, adjoining an auditorium and reception
room seating 1,500 persons. The mantel in this room cost $1,000, and the
center of the rotunda was an electric fountain gushing ice water, installed
at a cost of $2,000. The building was equipped with a cooling system for
use in hot weather. The cost of the sculpture with which the interior and
exterior of the building were decorated was over $14,000. This building
was destroyed by fire in early November, 1904 shortly before the close
of the Fair.
