Napoleon Bonaparte, By D.C. French

Napoleon Bonaparte was first consul of France in 1802 and 1803 when President Jefferson instructed the United States Minister at Paris, Robert R. Livingston, to open negotiations for the purchase of the city and island of New Orleans, then held by Spain but controlled by France. The sculptor represented the great emperor in one of his reflective moods. On his knee lies a document which he is considering deeply. Napoleon made easy the acquisition of Lousiana by proposing to sell the entire territory instead of the very small portion as first sought by the United States. The statue was located East of Festival Hall and the Terrace of States. For a better understanding of where the statue was located check out the Stereo View Card memorbilia page.
