Glass Sandwich Plate
I have had a request to showcase some of the more common souveniers
from the 1904 World's Fair. The glass sandwich plate fits that description.
The one shown above is from my collection, I actually have two. The plate
measures 7.25 inches in diameter, the edging is a basket weave design with
small flowers at the intersection of the "weaving" glass. The
center of the plate is of the Festival Hall and
Cascade Gardens and is done in negative bas-relief on the back of the
plate, and is usually painted gold, which gives the illusion of depth. The
words "World's Fair St. Louis 1904 " and "Festival Hall &
Cascade Gardens" encircle the top and bottom of the illustration respectively.
The manufacturer is currently still a mystery. This plate is one of the
most common souveniers and can usually be found at local flea markets and
can be purchased for a reasonable price. Everyone who collects 1904 World's
Fair memorabilia should have one of these in their collection.
The local urban legend that surrounds this plate is that you could purchase
this plate for one dollar when you purchased a cheese sandwich and a soda
on the Pike. The legend so far has not been substantiated
or denied.
