Shapleigh Hardware Enamel Cup
The item below acually from my personal collection. I purchased
it at an auction in Jackson, Missouri. The cup is an enameled cup with fluer-du-le
decoration encircling the rim top and bottom. The words "The World's
Fair -- St. Louis -- 1904 -- Louisiana Purchase Exposition Cup" wrap
around the top of the cup. On the one side of the cup is a map of the United
States at the time of the fair with the Louisiana Purchase overlaying the
map. The image in the center of the cup is of the Eads Bridge on the St.
Louis riverfront. An American balk eagle is in the lower front holding arrows
and an olive branch in each tallon, a ribbon in its beak with the words
" E Pluribus Unum." The front images are flanked by a portrait
of Napoleon on the left and Jefferson on the right. The map on the right
side of cup is of what the United States looked like when the Louisiana
Purchase took place in 1803. The bottom is stamped with the inscription:
Norvell-Shapleigh Hardware Co. St. Louis, Mo." It was manufactured
by the Elite Company in Austria. It is very rare to find one of these cups
in excellent condition, because it chipped very easily as you can see in
the photo below.
