Spoons have always been a popular item to collect. Currently
I have two spoons in my collection. The one pictured above was just added
to my collection and is now one of my most treasured pieces. Not because
of what it is but because of where it came from. This spoon was handed down
to me from my wife's (Diane) Aunt and Uncle. They told us it had been in
the family for years. It belonged to Diane's Grandmother. The story goes
that the spoon was gold plated and now the gold is beginning to wear off.
I am very proud to have this piece in my collection and I will treasure
it always.
The spoon is 5.5 inches in length and has been gold plated. The scene inside
the bowl is of the Festival Hall and Cascade Gardens
and shows the Palace of Education and Social Economy
on the left and the Palace of Electricity on
the right with the words "CASCADE GARDEN" arching in the lower
portion of the bowl. The ornate handle has the words "St. Louis 1904"
along the length of the handle. The Louisiana
Purchase Exposition Monument is encircled with a wreath of leaves a
banner above the monument reads "THE WORLD'S FAIR". The top end
of the handle has an image of a steamboat with the words under it reading
"CITY SEAL" and a banner over it reading "THE MOUND CITY".
On the reverse side of the spoon is an eagle and crest with the words "LOUISIANA
PURCHASE EXPOSITION". The spoon was manufactured by the Conn. Silver
Company.
