Many souvenirs from the World's Fair had a practical use. For example canes, small purses and jewelry. The above piece of memorabilia is called a watch fob. It was decorative and functional at the same time. The watch would be placed in the watch pocket and the fob would hang outside of the pocket. Not only did it look nice it also helped get the watch out of the pocket. There were many different designs of watch fobs available at the fair. Some World's Fair collectors specialize in collecting watch fobs. The watch fob above is a new addition to my collection. It is roughly five inches in length. There are three oval medallions connected with gold colored chain. The upper oval has the numbers "1904" intertwined with each other and there are ten stars that encircle the rim. The second oval has an American eagle with an olive branch in one talon and arrows in the other. The worlds "ST. LOUIS EXPOSITION 1904" encircling the eagle along with six stars. The third and last oval depicts the Palace of Liberal Arts.
The watch shown in the picture does not date for the time of the fair it is circa 1945.
